The Story of a Photographer
People often ask whether I always planned to turn photography into a side business. The short answer is no, not really. The longer answer, though, is a story about opportunity, faith, and making something out of nothing.
In the summer of 2021, I was casually scrolling through Facebook Marketplace with no real intention of buying anything. I was simply window shopping when I came across a listing for a “Used – Like New Sony Cyber-shot Camera.” The price listed underneath said only “$1.00,” and the description read: “Reach out for price info.” Curious, I decided to message the seller.
He replied, “Practically new, never used, works great — asking $50+.” As a college student living on a tight budget, even that felt like a stretch. Still, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask if he would consider a trade. I didn’t have much to offer, but I did have a Polo wristwatch that had barely been worn. I sent him a few pictures, hoping for the best.
What happened next completely surprised me.
The seller responded and said he would accept the trade as long as it was “worth his time.” Somehow, that little watch was enough. In exchange, he gave me far more than just an old Sony camera — he gave me a chance. A real opportunity. What he unknowingly handed me was “THE SHOT”: the chance to discover a passion, develop a skill, and build something meaningful from the ground up.
I’ve always been raised to believe that everything happens for a reason, and that moment only reinforced it. What started as a random marketplace trade became one of the most humbling and rewarding experiences of my life. Photography quickly became more than just a hobby. It became a creative outlet, a challenge, and eventually the foundation for something bigger than I ever expected.
This small business was built on a “nothing to something” mindset and continues to grow the same way it started — through hard work, consistency, faith, and passion. From that first little Sony Cyber-shot to eventually upgrading to a fully functioning Canon EOS 4000D DSLR, every step of the journey has required practice, patience, and persistence. Every lesson learned, every photo taken, and every opportunity received has shaped both my craft and my character.
None of this would have been possible without the blessings, support, and opportunities placed in my path along the way. What began as a simple trade turned into a reminder that sometimes the smallest moments can completely change the direction of your life.
